Catechists

Catechists are the people who give religious instruction in the State schools in our Parish. There are over 800 Catholic children attending the six primary schools and two secondary schools in the Menai district. The only formal education in our faith that they receive come from the 30 or so Catechist who give a half-hour lesson each week. This covers 30 to 42 classes, which leaves around 12 classes of Catholic children in our parish without a Scripture teacher. Full support is given to the catechists by way of structured lessons and booklets that are given to the students. Good support is also received from the schools who insist that the students treat the Scripture teachers with great respect.

New catechists can either begin straight away as a teacher of a Year 1 or Year 2 class, or start as an assistant teacher until they feel confident enough to take a class of their own. It is really not difficult and most catechists state that it is a most rewarding ministry. Volunteering to be a catechist for a 12 month period is a wonderful way of fulfilling our baptismal obligation to spread the faith.
